Before-school and after-school care: what to expect

Before- and after-school care covers the hours between your workday and the school bell: early drop-off and breakfast in the morning, then snack, homework help and play until pickup. The key questions are which schools are served, how children get there, and what happens on days school is out.

What happens before school?

Children arrive early, eat breakfast if the program serves it, and settle in with quiet games or reading until it's time to leave for school.

How do children get to and from school?

Programs handle this in one of three ways: their own van, a district bus stop at the center, or parent drop-off. Ask exactly which schools are covered and what happens on late-start and early-dismissal days.

What happens after school?

A good after-school program starts with a snack, gives a quiet homework block with help, then gets kids moving outdoors. Older kids should get more choice and independence.

What ratios apply?

Ohio allows one staff member for every 18 school-age children under 11, and one for every 20 children aged 11 to 14.

What about school breaks?

Ask whether the program is open on teacher days, winter and spring break, and summer, and how early you need to reserve those days.

LSU serves Mentor-area elementary and middle schools. Use the school route check on this page or call to confirm your child's school.

Does LSU take children to school?

Ask the director about transportation for your school. Many Mentor families use the school bus stop at LSU or drop off at school themselves.

What do children do in after-school care?

After a snack, children get a quiet homework block with help from staff, then outdoor play, games, art and group projects. Older kids get more choice in how they spend their time.
