Infant room safety: what parents should see

A safe infant room has babies sleeping on their backs in bare cribs, enough caregivers to meet Ohio's 1-to-5 ratio for babies under a year, strict hand washing, and feeding and naps on each baby's own schedule. Here is what to look for on a tour.

Safe sleep

  • Every baby sleeps on their back, in their own crib.
  • Firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet and nothing else: no blankets, pillows, bumpers or toys.
  • Teachers can see and hear sleeping babies at all times.

Enough hands

Ohio requires at least one caregiver for every five babies under 12 months, or two for twelve in the same room. Watch the room during your tour and count.

Clean and calm

  • Hand washing before and after every diaper change and feeding.
  • Shoes off or covered in crawling areas.
  • Mouthed toys set aside and sanitized.

Your baby's own schedule

Babies should eat and sleep when they need to, not on a group clock. Ask how the center records feedings, diapers and naps, and how you'll see that record.

Bottles and food

Bottles should be labeled with your baby's name and the date, and checked before every feeding. Ask how breast milk is stored and warmed.

Quick answers

What is the staff-to-child ratio in the infant room?

Ohio requires at least one caregiver for every five babies under 12 months (or two caregivers for twelve babies in one room) and one caregiver for every six children from 12 to 18 months. LSU meets or beats these ratios at all times, including at drop-off and nap time.

How does LSU keep sleeping babies safe?

Babies sleep on their backs, alone, in a crib with a firm, flat mattress and nothing else inside, following American Academy of Pediatrics safe sleep guidance. Teachers check on sleeping babies regularly and log every check.
